Forum Theme
« on: February 17, 2016, 10:16:05 PM »
I've looked at the themes for version 2.0.11 of this site's software, and there aren't a lot, but I found three that could be used as a base from which I could make our own, custom theme for the site. You can see a live demo of these themes at the following links:

Astonished: http://demo.smftricks.com/index.php?theme=4
Notes: Its pretty much a darker version of the current theme. Nothing too fancy

Gamerz: http://demo.smftricks.com/index.php?theme=25
Notes: A much darker theme and further departure from the current theme. Of course, I would change 'Gamerz' part at the top to something that makes more sense for this forum

Greeny: http://demo.smftricks.com/index.php?theme=64
Notes: This one is the most professional looking, but it will take more work to make it look like something of our own. I'd need to change the colors around and the imagery, but it sure is fancy looking.

Now, also note that there are other choices in that demo link that you can look at (if you go to the top right corner). If you see one you like or think would be a good base, let me know.

I didn't even think to add that as an option. I've added the current theme as an option (you should be able to change your vote if you wish).

Also, if any of you have any suggestions on other visual features for the site (such as a logo, mascot, or w/e) I'd be glad to hear about it!

As cheezy as the GameZ one is, I kind of like it. Provided that we would use smaller file images or atleast set the standar html backdrop to black so there isn't that split second white screen background before it fully loads. Having that as black or a simple repated pattern would mean that loading in wouldn't trigger momentary but jarring flashing.

Obviously it'd be customized and such, but I do like the otherwise simple design when you take out more obnoxious parts. The opacity and simple dark greys are easy on the eyes.

http://demo.smftricks.com/index.php?theme=67 there's also "SMF trick's" "darklight" theme, which, when using a less intrusive blue would be pretty good.

I don't really know though. The standard theme could work too, it'd be pretty simple to swap some of the palettes in CSS or change the lights or darks, logos etc. so that it's not literally the defualt theme. lol

Still have to see how others feel, my vote will always be for low brightness. lol

I don't mind the GamerZ one now that I bought a new monitor. I was using a monitor with 10% brightness cuz the capacitors were so aged that it'd turn off periodically if I turned up the brightness any more than that, so a dark colour scheme would have been impossible to read.

I'm fine with anything as long as it's readable. Personally i would prefer that the forum layout/style/ appearance stays mostly fetish content free. I mean no huge bellies in the background, tits on the menu or asses on the search bar. I'm sure it will happen in avatars but that's fine. I'm not a prude or anything but I think having a forum that is a reasonably viewable in semi private environments would be beneficial.I want to be able to have someone glance at the screen and only be able to tell I'm on a forum and not a fetish forum.

I'll still stick around either way, but i'd probably be more active with a discreet style. perhaps other might feel the same?

Mostly quoting to make sure this is working correctly.

The "darklight" theme seems to not be free, which is an issue. Otherwise, I do like it (though I think I'd up the brightness on the text a bit more).

I should note that the reason I added the Greeny one is that it works nicely on mobile, and I could change the all the visuals on it, but it might be a bit too over the top.

The GamerZ one, I'm definitely removing the ridiculous parts of it if it gets picked, but I do enjoy the overall look and feel of the actual forum parts. Its pretty easy on the eyes, though I probably need to up the brightness a bit.

That being said, I can also just open it up where you can choose your theme. Some prefer bright, some dark.

That's an excellent point, which brings me back to the "you choose your own theme" idea.

Yeah, I'd say it's all good as long as it all looks professional. It will be nice to make this a good working environment, as Kilif mentioned he wanted when creating this place.

So, obviously, as long as the default theme is a comfortable middle point and there's at least a light and a dark theme to choose from, it couldn't hurt.

Alright, it looks like the general consensus thus far is to provide a nice, default template (nothing lewd), and then provide some alternatives to people that prefer darker themes. A "night mode," if you will. Not sure if I'll get to that during the next downtime, but we'll see.

Ah, I realize something I forgot to mention. This site currently doesn't have a favicon. Which, is pretty likely to due with the fact that we don't have a logo yet but just thought I'd mention it.

Fenoxo's forums have been around for quite sometime now and they've never been given a favicon, so it's just a blank dotted line square where an image should be in the browser tabs and favorites and such.

The code is simple and in most cases you just need to add
Code: [Select]
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="/img/favicon.ico" /> to one's index or sometimes it's even easier, just adding a "favicon.ico" to the directory and it'll be automatically handled.

It's one of those little OCD details that irk me sometimes when a website that's been around a long time misses out on that tiny personalization point.

Oh yes, I'm planning on having that fixed. I like favicons, just need to actually make a logo.
